Forro do cana

 ABOUT FORRO DO CANA

Founded in 2018 and dedicated to the dissemination of the music of Northeastern Brasil, Forró do Cana blends the sounds of the Rabeca (Brazilian fiddle played by Serena Eades) and accordion (Steve Charles), with the Brazilian roots of Mario Silva’s 7-string acoustic guitar and Sara Magal’s percussion and vocals, rounded out by the percussion prowess of Liam Macdonald.

Triangle, Zabumba (a Brazilian bass-drum), and Sanfona (accordion) and vocals are traditional instrumentation of Forró. Forró do Cana adds the more contemporary sound of the 7-string guitar, Pandeiro, and 3-part vocals.

Forro do Cana formed as an ensemble that focused on this traditional Brazilian dance music but now writes original music in the style to feature the composers in the band. Other Brazilian dance styles are also featured: Frevo, which consists of joyful and frenetic ska-like rhythms and melodies from the northeast, naturally accompanied by dancers with tiny colourful umbrellas and costumes. And sprinkled into their set, audiences can expect some Chorinho, a virtuosic style that sounds like Bach meets Samba, stimulating the more complex melodic and rhythmic listeners.

What’s with the band name? Forró do Cana is a play on words: Cana meaning sugar cane in Portuguese, which is used to make Caldo de Cana (sugarcane juice) and Cachaça (sugarcane liquor), as well as an abbreviation of Canada.

Expect folkloric sounds, killer rhythms, and catchy songs! This band will make you dance, sing and groove hard
